Common Cushion Terms
There are essentially five types of cushions that you need to become familiar with before you begin shopping.
- Dining chair cushion: "Dining chair pad" is another term commonly used for this particular style of cushion. A dining chair cushion covers just the seat of the chair and is typically tied to the rods on the seat's back.
- Sofa cushions: These cushions are the core of any couch or sofa, making it a comfy and cozy place to relax.
- Rocker cushions: Designed for rockers and rocking chairs, this type of cushion ranges from complex to as simple as a dining chair cushion. It all depends on your chair.
- Window seat cushions: These cushions help transform a window seat into functional seating. Generally, these have to be custom-made to ensure a perfect fit.
- Bench cushions: Perfect for entryways and mudrooms, a bench cushion is a stylish way to get the most out of a bench.

Indoors or Outdoors?
Once you are familiar with the different types of cushions, you need to focus on where and how they will be used. This will help you determine if you need to purchase an indoor or outdoor one.
While it's best to use indoor cushions only indoors, there are some times when it's appropriate to use outdoor cushions indoors. For example, a bench in a mudroom takes a lot of abuse. You might consider selecting an outdoor cushion that is water-resistant and easily cleaned and maintained.
Custom-made or Standard?
For unique pieces like window seats, you might need to have a cushion custom-made to ensure a perfect fit. However, for more common pieces like dining chairs, rockers, and sofas, there are plenty of ready-to-purchase cushions that offer a near-perfect fit.
